About this Photograph:
Three hands guide and attach small metal milk pots to the back of a Hindu devotee. The milk pots have fish hook-like needles that are pierced into the skin so that the pots can hang from the devotee’s skin — each one an added weight to their physical pain of burden. This exercise of faith is considered a sort of physical trial in the pursuit of atonement. This ritual is performed during the Hindu celebration of Thaipusam.

“But photography is not all seeing in the sense that the eyes see. Our vision, a binocular one, is in a continuous state of flux, while the camera captures and fixes forever (unless the damn prints fade !) a single, isolated condition of the moment. Besides, we use lenses of various focal lengths to purposely exaggerate actual seeing, and we often “overcorrect” color for the same reason. In printing we carry on our willful distortion of fact by using contrasty papers which give results quite different from the sense or object as it was in nature.”

Edward Weston, January 28, 1932

I’m in a NEW Art Photography Group Exhibition at ARTDOC Photography Magazine

“DARTH PLAGUEIS, ALS #402”

I did have some good news: I’m in a Group Exhibition in ARTDOC Photography Magazine, titled, EXPERIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPHY, which opened on 19 August 2021.

I have two artworks in the exhibition: “DARTH PLAGUEIS”, and, “HECATOMB TO THE ALIEN OVERLORDS”. Both images are from my ABSTRACT LIGHT STREAKS (ALS) Photography Series, which now has 482 pieces in it, and spans a period from 2015 to the Present.

Here’s the Link to the Exhibition at ARTDOC Magazine:

https://www.artdoc.photo/online-exhibition/experimental-photography

My Images are at the end of the exhibition page, and close out the exhibition of very interesting, and inspiring images. I’m very grateful to have been chosen to be in this exhibition, as my photography style is nearly 100% Experimental and Abstract.

Another reason I’m very thankful to be exhibited and published in ARTDOC Photography Magazine is because some photographer legends, and major photography inspirations and masters of the craft, such as Sabastiao Salgado, have their portfolios published in this magazine.

“HECATOMB TO THE ALIEN OVERLORDS, ALS #428”, (2021), from the Abstract Light Streaks Photography Series.

MENTAL NOTE #142, SIMPLIFY YOUR COMPOSITIONS, SOMETIMES TOO MUCH IS TOO MUCH!

MENTAL NOTE #142: SIMPLIFY YOUR COMPOSITIONS — SOMETIMES TOO MUCH IS TOO MUCH!

“All good drawing or painting is compositional.
Better see what you can do on your canvas with these simple notes and for the time being let all details go.
It is useless to keep on adding things to a canvas.
Some painters put thousands of big and little features into a face, colors and more colors.
All day long they keep adding more and more.
They are like whales in a sea with their mouths wide open swallowing everything that comes along.
Much can be done with little.” ~ ROBERT HENRI ~ Henri, Robert, and Margery A. Ryerson. The Art Spirit: Notes, Articles, Fragments of Letters and Talks to Students … Westview Press, 1984.

This is Great advice from Sage-Master Painter, ROBERT HENRI. I WISH I could say that I follow his advice all of the time, but I fail, often. I have quoted Robert Henri, more than any other artist. His advice for Art, and Life, is profound. If I could go back in time and apprentice, or study with any artist in history, I think I would travel back in time and study with Robert Henri — VERY CLOSE ALTERNATIVE CHOICES would be Whistler, Klimt, or Kandinsky.

The advice from Henri also works for PHOTOGRAPHY! Don’t clutter your photographs up with unnecessary items. Compose on your main topic of focus, and crop in-frame. Leave unnecessary items out or the frame that add nothing to your photo-story.

MENTAL NOTE #140, What You Want At What Cost

MENTAL NOTE #140: “You can get whatever you want in life, but at what cost? That’s been the story of my life”. ~ Jamie Thomas ~

Jamie Thomas : He is a Professional Skateboarder and Entrepreneur, but it didn’t come easily — Never does, usually. He and two friends went to California to become Pro Skateboarders, but he took hard knocks all the way to get to that dream. At one point early on, they were so broke, they were panhandling for change in San Francisco, and eating scraps of leftovers from a pizza joint. And at night, they would often sleep outside, sometimes in the bowl, at the skateboard park. I won’t go into his full story here, but the sacrifices he made for a long time, to first just get off the streets, and after time, to get skateboard sponsorships, and then starting businesses, was a journey of unending perseverance, total dedication, never giving up, and taking risks. This same core life philosophy can also be applied to whatever you are driven by in life.

TWISTED SUFFOCATION

TWISTED SUFFOCATION — Rorschach Art Photography, by Nawfal Johnson

THE INFLUENCE FOR THIS WORK:

“UNSEEN” ~ By THE GHOST INSIDE.

Here are the first two verses of this song: These words hit me kind of hard, as I recently lost someone close to me.

“Unseen”: ~”One foot in the grave and one hand in the sky
Heaven comes with a price
If all I know is Hell
How will I ever find paradise?
Rabid are the wolves within
That hunt with a vengeful sickness
When the innocent lose their innocence
How can they find forgiveness? ~ It took everything
To find a shred of hope in only shadows of me
So am I guilty for trying to put my mind at ease?
This pain is unseen.” ~

MIRRORED ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY” (aka “RORSCHACH ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY”) Series Years: 2007 to Present (On-Going). These pieces are colour and Black & White, abstract images that are designed with a mirrored effect, also known as Rorschach Art. Sometimes the mirrored image is an exact opposite-duplicate for both sides. However, in some cases, one half is ALMOST a mirrored duplicate, but with a few compositional differences. Some pieces are urban, others rural…some have a mechanical or structural-chaotic focus. At times, the formations you can see in the artworks may appear ominous, even scary, or evil. Nevertheless, the viewer of my portfolio can decide for themselves what they see in these MIRRORED ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHY images.
